    Description

Fresh Pond Biodiversity & Climate Citizen Scientist

Calling all curious minds. Join us in advancing our shared understanding of biodiversity and conservation.

Earthwise Aware (EwA | www.earthwiseaware.org) invites volunteers to contribute to national research on how climate change is reshaping the life cycles of plants, insects, and other organisms. We provide training, and no prior experience is needed, only an interest in the natural world.

We offer several volunteer opportunities in Middlesex County, including one based at Lusitania Meadow in the Fresh Pond Reservation (Cambridge).

You can participate in a variety of ways:

    • Plant phenology: Track seasonal changes in trees and native perennial species that support pollinators and other wildlife.
    • Pollinator and beneficial insect monitoring: Count and observe insect visits to flowering plants.
    • Ecological connections: Help document how species interactions shift in response to a changing climate.

Our work is made possible through partnership with the Cambridge Water Department and Fresh Pond rangers. Together, we collect meaningful data that contributes to national research efforts and supports urban biodiversity and conservation.

Weekly volunteer sessions are typically 1 to 1.5 hours:

    • Mondays at 2:00 PM in fall, winter, and spring
    • Mondays at 10:00 AM in summer
    • Times may vary with weather conditions

    Instructions:

Thank you for considering applying. Please make sure you have read our Biodiversity and Climate Participatory Science storyMap.

After reviewing your application, we will contact you. You can also get ahead by attending a field orientation, which we typically recommend as part of our follow-up. This session offers a comprehensive introduction to EwA’s fields of study and fieldwork.

Orientations are held monthly at two locations:

    • Second Monday of the month at Middlesex Fells Reservation (Medford area)
    • Second Saturday of the month at the Somerville Growing Center

The content is the same at both sites and covers our work across all field locations. You can find more details [here]. It is a great opportunity to meet the team, learn about our approach, and ask questions. Afterward, we will provide more field- and data-specific guidance.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!
