    Description

    Position: Volunteer Grant Writer

    Reports to: Executive Director

    Classification: Part-time Employee

    Work Location: Remote

    Work Schedule: 5-10 hours per week (contingent upon active proposals and deadlines)

    Pay Rate: Unpaid

    Position Summary: The Jane Addams Peace Association (JAPA) seeks a dedicated and skilled volunteer grant writer to help secure funding that advances our mission of peace, social justice, and international cooperation. This is a meaningful opportunity to contribute your expertise directly to work that honors the legacy of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jane Addams.

    Responsibilities/Duties:

    • Research and identify grant opportunities from foundations, government sources, individual donors, and corporate giving programs aligned with JAPA’s mission
    • Write compelling, well-researched grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and supporting narratives
    • Tailor each application to the priorities of the funder while reflecting JAPA’s voice and values
    • Contribute to the grants calendar and track submission deadlines, reporting requirements, and award statuses
    • Draft interim and final grant reports in collaboration with program staff
    • Assist in building and maintaining a prospect database of potential funders
    • Collaborate with the executive director and board on funding strategy as needed

    Qualifications:

    • A degree preferred and at least 2 years of grant writing experience with proven track record
    • Prior experience in a non-profit setting or equivalent preferred
    • Demonstrated experience writing grant proposals, with at least one successfully funded grant preferred
    • Exceptional written communication skills — clear, persuasive, and concise
    • Strong research skills, including familiarity with grant databases (e.g., Candid/Foundation Directory, etc.)
    • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple proposals simultaneously
    • Attention to detail in following funder guidelines and formatting requirements
    • Proficiency with Google Workspace and project management tools
    • Experience with foundations focused on peace, human rights, gender equity, or social justice

    • Demonstrated commitment to the values of peace, nonviolence, and social justice — in professional work, volunteer history, or lived experience
    • Alignment with JAPA’s core belief that lasting peace requires gender equity, racial justice, economic fairness, and disarmament
    • Respect for and understanding of feminist, intersectional approaches to peacebuilding
    • Genuine enthusiasm for the legacy and ongoing work of Jane Addams and WILPF
    • Ability to represent the organization’s voice authentically in written communications to funders
