    Description

    Department: Human Resources

    Position Type: Volunteer

    Location: Remote

    Reports To: HR Leadership

Join TROA and Help Build a Stronger People-First Volunteer Culture

TROA is looking for a thoughtful and dependable Volunteer HR Generalist to help strengthen the people side of our growing organization.

This role is ideal for someone with experience or interest in HR, recruiting, volunteer management, nonprofit operations, people support, or internal process development. As an HR Generalist, you will help support recruitment, onboarding, volunteer relations, retention, documentation, and HR process improvement.

TROA is a volunteer-led nonprofit, which means our systems are still growing with us. This is a meaningful opportunity for someone who wants hands-on HR experience while helping build a healthier, more supportive volunteer environment.

    Position Overview

The HR Generalist supports the broader Human Resources function by helping create clear, consistent, and compassionate processes for volunteers and department leaders.

This role may assist with applicant review, onboarding support, volunteer check-ins, policy development, internal documentation, retention efforts, and volunteer-related concerns. The HR Generalist helps ensure that TROA’s volunteers are not only brought into the organization, but also supported throughout their time with us.

The ideal candidate is mature, communicative, organized, fair-minded, and comfortable helping build structure in a growing volunteer environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    Recruitment & Onboarding Support

    • Assist with applicant screening, interview coordination, and volunteer placement
    • Support onboarding processes and required document follow-up
    • Help ensure applicants and new volunteers receive clear communication
    • Partner with HR leadership to improve the volunteer entry experience

    Volunteer Relations & Retention

    • Support volunteer check-ins, engagement efforts, and retention initiatives
    • Help identify concerns, communication gaps, or support needs
    • Assist with recognition, volunteer experience, and team culture efforts
    • Escalate sensitive or complex concerns to HR leadership

    HR Process & Policy Support

    • Help develop and improve HR templates, procedures, and workflows
    • Assist with documentation for recruitment, onboarding, offboarding, and volunteer support
    • Review HR processes for clarity, consistency, and fairness
    • Help organize HR information so leaders and volunteers can better understand expectations

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience or interest in HR, recruiting, volunteer management, nonprofit work, or people operations
    • Strong communication and documentation skills
    • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and care
    • Reliable follow-through and willingness to provide updates
    • Fair, calm, and professional approach to volunteer concerns
    • Comfortable working remotely in a growing organization
    • Ability to help build structure without needing every process to already be finalized

    What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who cares about people, systems, and follow-through.

This role is a good fit for someone who understands that volunteer work can be flexible, but still depends on communication, reliability, and trust. The HR Generalist should be comfortable supporting people with empathy while also helping create clear expectations and consistent processes.

You do not need to have every HR answer. We are looking for someone who can think through people-related challenges, ask questions, document clearly, and help TROA grow in a healthier direction.

    Why This Role Matters

The HR Generalist helps shape how volunteers experience TROA.

Your work supports the systems that help people feel welcomed, respected, guided, and retained. By helping strengthen HR, you help TROA build a more stable, compassionate, and mission-aligned volunteer culture.

    What You’ll Gain

    • Hands-on experience in nonprofit HR and people operations
    • Experience with recruiting, onboarding, retention, and volunteer relations
    • Opportunities to help shape HR policies, templates, and internal processes
    • Resume-building experience in a growing mission-driven organization
    • Skill development in communication, documentation, conflict support, and volunteer engagement
    • Meaningful involvement in building a healthier volunteer culture from the ground up
