    Job Title:

    Social Work and Public Health Volunteer (Homeless and At-Risk Populations)

    Position Type:

    Orange County, California and Klamath County, Oregon

    Program Overview:

    We are committed to improving the health, stability, and well-being of individuals experiencing homelessness and those at risk of housing instability. Our work focuses on outreach, resource connection, prevention, and community-based support through a public health and social services lens.

    Position Summary:

    The Social Work & Public Health Volunteer supports outreach and service delivery efforts for individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. Volunteers assist with connecting clients to essential resources, promoting health and safety, and supporting program staff in delivering compassionate, client-centered care.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Conduct street and community outreach alongside staff or trained team members
    • Assist in connecting individuals to services such as:
      • Shelter and housing resources
      • Food assistance programs
      • Healthcare and mental health services
      • Substance use support services
    • Help distribute hygiene kits, food, water, and other essential supplies
    • Provide basic health education (e.g., hygiene, disease prevention, harm reduction)
    • Support client intake, documentation, and referral processes (as appropriate)
    • Maintain respectful, nonjudgmental communication with all clients
    • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and debrief sessions
    • Assist with community events, workshops, or resource fairs

    Learning Opportunities:

    • Hands-on experience in social work and public health settings
    • Exposure to trauma-informed care and harm reduction practices
    • Understanding of homelessness systems, policies, and service networks
    • Skill-building in client engagement, case support, and community outreach

    Qualifications:

    Required:

    • Interest in social work, public health, psychology, or related fields
    • Compassion and respect for diverse populations
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

    Preferred:

    • Coursework or experience in social work, public health, or human services
    • Experience working with vulnerable or underserved populations
    • Bilingual or multilingual abilities (a plus)

    Physical & Environmental Conditions:

    • May involve walking, standing, and working outdoors in various weather conditions
    • Some lifting of supplies (up to ~25 lbs) may be required
    • Work may occur in shelters, community centers, or street outreach settings

    Training & Support:

    Volunteers will receive training in:

    • Trauma-informed care
    • De-escalation and safety practices
    • Cultural competency
    • Local resource navigation

    Ongoing supervision and support will be provided by program staff.

    Commitment:

    • Minimum commitment of 10 for 12 preferred
    • Flexible scheduling, including some evenings or weekends
