THE IMPORTANT ROLE OF A HOSPICE VOLUNTEER

Volunteers perform many important duties. Whether providing companionship in a patient’s home, assisting with special events, or helping with other meaningful tasks, volunteers play a vital role in allowing hospice to meet the needs of the community more fully.

    HOW DO HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS HELP?

Hospice volunteers are essential in providing the level of care and support that patients and their loved ones expect from hospice services. The primary goal of a hospice volunteer is to offer empathy, compassion, and companionship to both the patient and their family during difficult times.

Volunteer duties vary depending on the needs of the patient and family. In addition to patient support, volunteers may also assist through community outreach activities, fundraising, or administrative tasks. Through participation and engagement, hospice volunteers find deep value in serving patients, families, and their community.

    THE BENEFITS OF HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS

The importance of hospice volunteers should never be overlooked. Volunteers provide layers of support that extend beyond medical care, including:

    • Empathetic listening
    • Companionship and activity involvement
    • Communication support between patients, families, and hospice staff
    • Assistance with activities of daily living (as appropriate)

These services greatly enhance the quality of life for patients and their loved ones.

    COMMUNICATION

Volunteers can be a valuable link between the patient, family, and hospice care team, helping ensure that concerns are communicated and care is coordinated smoothly.

    ADMINISTRATIVE VOLUNTEERING

In addition to working directly with patients, volunteers can help hospice operations in many other ways, including:

    • Assisting with fundraising
    • Answering phones
    • Preparing mailings
    • Photocopying and data entry
    • Supporting office needs
    • Helping with community events

There truly is something for everyone.

    HOSPICE VOLUNTEER TRAINING

All volunteers must complete training to ensure they are prepared and confident in their roles. While training may vary depending on assignments, all volunteers receive core instruction that includes:

    • Mission and philosophy of hospice care
    • Overview of hospice services
    • Best practices, procedures, and precautions
    • Providing emotional support to families
    • Emergency procedures
    • Symptoms of life-limiting illnesses
    • Common injuries
    • Communication skills
    • Professional boundaries
    • End-of-life processes
    • Grief and bereavement support

This training ensures volunteers are well-equipped to provide compassionate, high-quality support.
