Hospice volunteers needed in providing assistance, companionship, joy, and support to hospice patients and their families in their places of residence, (companionship visits, reading aloud, sitting with patients, etc) or in the facility in which they reside. Volunteers are an integral part of the hospice team, filling roles ranging from direct contact with patients to providing clerical and fundraising support for the organization. Hospices that participate with Medicare are required to utilize volunteers alongside their paid clinical and administrative staff. Hospice volunteers describe their work as gratifying, intellectually stimulating, and emotionally meaningful.
