    Description

Human connection is especially important at the end of life. Being with a person as he or she transitions to end of life is one of the most profound and intimate of human experiences. With the goal of making sure no one is alone, Autumn Hospice is looking for volunteers to sit vigil by the bedside of patients in the final stages of life.

"Vigil volunteers" offer companionship, comfort, and presence to patients during the time immediately prior to their death. They might dim the lights, share quiet music, read, or simply sit and hold the patient’s hand.

Vigil volunteers work in shifts to be with patients when family members are unavailable, or when family members need a break, but want to make sure their loved ones are never alone when they are so close to death. Sometimes vigil volunteers are there for patients who have no family; for patients who don’t have loved ones by their side, a vigil can provide the kind of comfort that can only be offered by another human being.

    Position Requirements

    Vigil volunteers must:

      be age 18 or older

        be comfortable around death

have strong communication skills, especially active listening

have the ability to maintain composure in emotional and stressful situations

have the ability to remain open and supportive and without judgment, allowing the dying person to share whatever he or she is experiencing

be willing to be called for assignment on short-notice and have some flexibility with scheduling

have a valid driver’s license and insurance coverage and 24/7 access to a vehicle

Previous experience working or volunteering for hospice preferred but not required.
