Make a Difference, One Moment at a Time: Hospice Volunteers Needed | Greater Houston Area

    Organization: Halcyon Home Hospice

Location: Houston, Texas, and surrounding communities

Volunteer Commitment: Flexible scheduling — every hour makes a difference!

    About Halcyon Home Hospice

At Halcyon Home Hospice, we believe that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone's life. Our mission is to provide compassionate care, comfort, and support to individuals receiving hospice services and their loved ones.

We are looking for compassionate, dependable, and caring individuals to join our volunteer team! Whether you are a student seeking community service hours, a retiree looking for a meaningful way to spend your time, a working adult with a generous heart, or someone who simply wants to give back to the community, there is a place for you at Halcyon Home Hospice.

You do not need medical experience to volunteer. We welcome people with different backgrounds, talents, interests, and availability. Whether you prefer spending time with patients, helping in our office, or participating in community outreach, your time and willingness to serve are what matter most.

    Volunteer Opportunities

Sometimes, the greatest gift you can offer is your time and presence. Our patient-facing volunteers help create moments of connection, comfort, and companionship for individuals receiving hospice care.

    Volunteer activities may include:

    • Sitting with patients and providing companionship.
    • Engaging in friendly conversation, storytelling, and reminiscing.
    • Listening to patients share their stories, memories, interests, and experiences.
    • Reading books, newspapers, or other materials aloud.
    • Playing games or participating in simple recreational activities.
    • Running approved errands to help meet patient or family needs.
    • Assisting with light housekeeping tasks, when appropriate and approved.
    • Offering a friendly, reassuring presence to help patients feel less isolated.

Our goal is to help patients feel heard, valued, and supported while respecting their individual preferences, dignity, and comfort.

    Hospice Office and Administrative Support

Not every volunteer needs to work directly with patients. Behind-the-scenes volunteers play an important role in helping our hospice team stay organized and serve families efficiently.

    Office volunteer opportunities may include:

    • Assembling and organizing binders.
    • Filing and organizing approved office documents.
    • Organizing office supplies and taking inventory.
    • Preparing packets and materials for staff and community events.
    • Assisting with approved clerical and administrative projects.
    • Organizing volunteer materials and helping prepare outreach resources.
    • Supporting special projects as assigned.

These opportunities are especially suitable for individuals who enjoy organization, administrative work, and helping a team operate smoothly.

    Community Engagement and Outreach

Help us connect with our community and spread awareness about the importance of compassionate hospice care.

    Volunteers may assist with:

    • Community outreach and engagement events.
    • Preparing promotional materials and event supplies.
    • Supporting community activities and volunteer recruitment initiatives.
    • Helping organize donation drives or approved community projects.
    • Participating in approved awareness and educational events.

These opportunities are a great fit for students, community groups, retirees, and individuals who enjoy meeting people and supporting meaningful causes.

    Creative and Special Volunteer Projects

Have a special talent or hobby? We would love to hear about it!

Volunteers may contribute through arts and crafts, handmade comfort items, music, creative activities, or other special projects that bring joy and encouragement to patients and families.

Whether you enjoy crafting, reading, organizing, creating, or simply spending time with others, your talents may be just what we need.

    Who Can Volunteer?

    We welcome:

    • High school and college students seeking community service hours and meaningful volunteer experience.
    • Retirees who want to share their time, knowledge, and life experiences.
    • Working adults looking for flexible ways to give back.
    • Community members who want to support patients and families.
    • Individuals with administrative, creative, organizational, or interpersonal skills.
    • Groups and organizations interested in participating in approved volunteer projects.

All backgrounds and skill levels are welcome. What matters most is compassion, reliability, respect, and a willingness to help.

    Flexible Scheduling

We understand that everyone has different responsibilities and schedules. We strive to offer flexible opportunities based on volunteer availability, program needs, and the type of service being provided.

Whether you can contribute a few hours a week, volunteer occasionally, help with a one-time project, or assist with community events, we appreciate the time you are willing to give.

Students seeking community service hours are encouraged to inquire about available opportunities, scheduling, and documentation of completed hours.

    Volunteer Requirements

Patient-facing and office volunteer roles may have different requirements. Depending on the assignment, volunteers may need to complete an application, screening or background checks, orientation, training, confidentiality requirements, and other applicable onboarding steps before beginning service.

Patient visits and other activities will be coordinated through our volunteer program to ensure that assignments are appropriate, safe, and consistent with hospice policies.

Why Volunteer With Halcyon Home Hospice?

Volunteering is about more than completing hours or filling free time. It is about showing up for others, creating meaningful connections, and offering kindness when it matters.

A conversation can brighten someone's afternoon. A helping hand can make a family's day easier. An organized office can help our team work more efficiently. A few hours of your time can contribute to a much larger mission of compassionate care.

Every hour matters. Every act of kindness counts. Every volunteer makes a difference.
