Work on Climate (WoCl) is a leading non-profit focused on mobilizing humanity’s talent to build a regenerative, climate-positive economy.
You probably know us for our online community — the world’s largest climate career and action community — which has helped thousands of people find climate jobs, start companies, and build impactful networks. We’ve been featured in Fast Company, the New York Times, Wired, and more.
But our work is entering a new chapter beyond helping individuals find climate jobs.
We’re now supporting professionals to engage in climate leadership — organizing, mobilizing, and transforming whole sectors and regions toward regenerative futures, through regional chapters of issue-focused work. (Read more about this transition here: https://workonclimate.org/2025/12/17/where-work-on-climate-is-headed/).
About the team
Today our team is 7 total members geo located across North America and the UK. Our weekly meeting takes place on Tuesdays at 11:30AM PST.
Role Summary
The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator is essentially our internal “Chief Vibes Officer” and ultimate connector of people. With direction and support from the People and Culture Manager, this role focuses on creating meaningful touchpoints with volunteers, helping them feel welcomed, supported, and connected to the broader mission. You will be the friendly face that welcomes new talent and the behind-the-scenes champion who brings our teams together for authentic connection
Time commitment
- 5 hours/week consistently for at least the next 6 months (we’d love you to stay longer!)
- Weekly meeting attendance is required (See meeting time above in the “About the team” section)
What’s in it for me?
In addition to playing a critical role in enabling the climate talent transition, you will get to:
- Make a significant impact on the volunteer experience by developing engagement and retention strategies
- Opportunity to work with a passionate team dedicated to addressing climate change
- You will be the ultimate “connector of people.” Because you welcome every new volunteer, you will naturally build a massive network of talented, senior professionals who are giving back to the climate space. This is the perfect role for someone looking to rapidly expand their climate network while helping others do the same.
- Collaborate with top-notch teammates passionate about climate
- A great line on your resume! Employers know and respect us
What skills and commitment do I need?
You will need to be highly self-motivated and capable of breaking down large tasks into smaller components, prioritizing your work, and identifying when you need help (and asking for it!). You will collaborate with the People and Culture Manager and the rest of the People Ops team to create a strong volunteer experience.
Responsibilities may include:
- The Humanity Huddle is our monthly 45-min virtual volunteer gathering where we casually come together to connect, recharge, and inspire each other. Each WoCl internal team rotates with the hosting responsibility each month but you’ll act as the behind-the-scenes coordinator to make this happen.
- You will support the hosting team by setting up the calendar invites, promoting the event in Slack, helping them brainstorm, and attending the Huddle to cheer them on. Your goal is to get the community hyped and psyched to attend!
- Act as a friendly, welcoming face for new volunteers when they first join. Get to know them, learn about their interests, and “connect the dots” by introducing them to other folks across the organization.
- Be a vibrant presence in Slack. Creatively facilitate connections and build community between different siloed teams to foster a deeper, more unified culture
- Help gather and share feedback to inform strategies for deeper volunteer engagement
- Assist with internal documentation, messaging, or creative ways to build team culture
What skills and commitment do I need?
You will need to be highly organized and have basic management skills:
- Strong People/HR background with an interest in culture and engagement (minimum 2 years in People/HR-related roles)
- You bring a naturally enthusiastic and positive vibe to the spaces you enter.
- We lead with being ourselves. You are comfortable being vulnerable and encouraging others to show up authentically.
- Openness to feedback, collaboration, and participating in our Tuesday team meetings.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to hype up events, write engaging Slack messages, and chat with new volunteers.
- Interest in growing your experience in people ops, engagement, or culture-focused roles
- Comfort using tools like Slack, Notion, Canva, and Zoom to handle the backend admin work that makes our community events run smoothly.
Common Challenges
- Some teams (like those who are more technical or introverted) might feel intimidated by the idea of hosting a community event. A key challenge will be coaching them through this, reassuring them that it’s not a “heavy lift,” and helping them avoid over-engineering their huddle
- Because our volunteers are spread across the globe, you will need to think flexibly and help hosting teams experiment with different days and times to maximize turnout and inclusivity.
- Keeping different, often siloed teams organized and on track for their assigned month requires highly proactive communication and consistent follow-up.
- Ensuring that all volunteers, regardless of background or experience, feel included and valued can be an ongoing challenge. Striving for diversity and inclusion requires consistent effort and awareness.
- Ensuring that all volunteers feel included and valued requires consistent effort, awareness, and really strong teamwork alongside the rest of the People Ops team.
