Michael lost his sight back in 2009. Luckily, he found the great sport of dragon boat canoe racing, a team sport, in 2010. Now, he and his team, Adaptive Fusion are racing locally, as well as internationally, as they have reached the highest levels in the sport.
Practices are held Saturday and Sunday mornings at Mothers Beach in Long Beach. Would you have a few hours to come out and help guide Michael and some of his blind teammates? You will be taught the simple techniques for guiding someone who is blind or partially sighted.
We gather on the grass and socialize for a bit. Then we warm-up, take the boat down to the water. You could try out dragon boating, or you could remain on the beach while the team is on the water for about 75 minutes. Then theycome back in, clean the boat, and get an update or instructions before leaving. The entire practice is from 8:45 AM to 11:15 AM.
Our team also has people who are Deaf, amputees, and people with hidden challenges like PTSD.
Please consider volunteering on a Saturday or a Sunday to help Michael out. Thanks!
