    Description

Machine Literate is building free, interactive AI-literacy lessons for students in grades 5–12, like Brilliant or Duolingo but for understanding how AI works, where it goes wrong and how to use it responsibly.

We have a working prototype and need engineers to help turn it into a polished, reliable learning platform.

    What you'd do:

    • Build interactive lesson features (questions, feedback, progress)
    • Review code and keep changes small, tested and documented
    • Help newer contributors get set up

Good fit if you: have built and maintained web apps with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and you care about clean, tested code. No particular framework required. Experienced engineers may grow into a lead role as the team grows.

Commitment: Flexible. Around 2–5 hours in an active week is typical, but smaller contributions are welcome.

Our mission: Make AI literacy free for every student, so they understand how AI works and learn to use it responsibly.

Why I started this: At my school, the head of school once said we are "afraid of the machines." That stuck with me. AI is going to be part of every student's future, so schools shouldn't fear it. They should teach it, and teach it responsibly.

About us: I'm Aditya Jhalani, and I founded Machine Literate, Inc., a New York nonprofit. We're pre-launch, and our first volunteers will help shape how everything works.

How it works: Remote, unpaid, adults 18+. Accepted volunteers join our team Slack and pick a first task. No calls required, but happy to talk if you'd like. You can pause or stop anytime. Unless you're a tutor, you won't work directly with students or see any student information.

How to apply: Click Apply on this page and answer a few short questions. It takes about 2 minutes and no résumé is needed.
