    Description

    Exercise and mental stimulation are a very important part of a dog’s daily activities. The interaction we provide during enrichment helps to bring some normalcy and positive experiences to an extremely stressful environment. This position will also cover helping to teach basic cues as well as leash walking skills, social interaction, and some customer service duties as applicable throughout the day.

    • Maintain hallway and play yard safety
    • Stay updated on all new procedures, protocols, and required training
    • Read animal body language and respond appropriately
    • Maintain a calm and quiet attitude at all times - no loud talking, no agitated or quick movements
    • Read and understand kennel and hallway signage
    • Respond quickly and appropriately to verbal instruction of staff
    • Interact with the public in a way that reflects Broward County Animal Care mission/values
    • Walk animals on leash in designated area only
    • Notify appropriate personnel if any problems are observed in kennels such as disruptive patrons, aggressive behavior from animals, broken equipment, etc.

    • Minimum Age: Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Unfortunately, we are unable to make exceptions.
    • Court-Ordered Hours: We are not able to accommodate court-ordered community service.

    Can anyone under 16 volunteer?

    Not at the shelter. However, families can get involved through our Foster or Broward Buddies Programs. Email foster@broward.org to learn more.

    Do you accept group volunteers?

    Yes! Groups are welcome with advance scheduling. Email animalcarevolunteer@broward.org for details.

    Is prior experience required?

    No experience is needed—we provide orientation and on-the-job training.

    What’s the time commitment?

    Volunteers commit to at least 8 hours within a 3-month period to stay active.

    Can I earn school community service hours?

    Yes, if you’re 16 or older. Students under 16 can foster or host a donation drive instead (email foster@broward.org or animalcarevolunteer@broward.org).

    Do you accept seasonal volunteers?

    Absolutely. Just let the Volunteer Coordinator know your availability.

    Is a background check required?

    Yes! All volunteers complete a background check.

    Do I need to live in Broward County?

    No, residency is not required.

    Can youth volunteers help at events?

    Yes, but you must be 18 or older to handle animals and provide your own transportation.

    I already have dog-walking experience. Do I still need training?

    Yes. All dog walkers complete our training to ensure the safety of animals, volunteers, staff, and visitors.

    Can I change my volunteer assignment?

    Yes, you are welcome to explore different departments where help is needed most.

    Can I just show up to volunteer?

    No. All shifts must be scheduled via Volgistics in advance to keep operations running smoothly.
