The focus of this position is to deliver blood products (whole blood, platelets and plasma) to area hospitals from the Douglasville, Georgia processing facility. The drivers begin and end in Douglasville and they use Red Cross vehicles (small SUV’s and sedans) to make the runs. No special licensing requirements are necessary. Volunteers are needed for the regular hospital deliveries that occur Monday through Friday and the shifts begin at 5am, 6am, 7am, 8am and 9am and take 4-6 hours to complete depending on traffic. There is also need for volunteers for ad hoc runs which are the replenishment runs made when a facility is low on blood products but do not have a regular delivery scheduled immediately. There are also needs for coverage of stat runs which are the emergency situations that may develop and the hospital does not have the required amount of product on hand to adequately serve their patient population. The ad hoc and stat runs are in the afternoons and evenings and include Saturday and Sunday coverage needs. Volunteers do need to be able to do some bending and light lifting in order to get the storage containers in and out of the vehicles. This is also an opportunity for couples to volunteer together because there is also a navigator position available to assist with directions, paperwork and delivery. The emphasis to volunteers is that they are helping to save lives on an immediate basis.

All volunteers and employees will follow current Red Cross COVID-19 protocols.
