About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, social-emotional learning, academic enrichment, creative expression, and community partnerships, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces for young people to thrive.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Volunteer Legal Assistant to support MAP’s legal and compliance functions. This role will involve assisting attorneys and staff with documentation, research, contract preparation, and administrative tasks related to nonprofit governance and partnerships. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and eager to contribute to MAP’s mission through legal support.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with drafting, reviewing, and organizing contracts, MOUs, and agreements
• Conduct legal research on nonprofit compliance, governance, and related issues
• Maintain and update legal files, records, and tracking systems
• Support filings and documentation related to nonprofit and tax-exempt requirements
• Provide administrative support to MAP’s attorneys and leadership team
• Ensure confidentiality and adherence to MAP’s policies and standards

Qualifications

• Coursework or background in legal studies, paralegal training, or related experience
• Strong research, writing, and organizational skills
• Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Gmail)
• Ability to manage sensitive information with discretion
• Strong attention to detail and time management skills
• Interest in nonprofit, education, and housing is a plus

Commitment

• Volunteer role, approximately 5–10 hours per week
• Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
• Fully remote with occasional virtual meetings
