About Q’s Ministry / BHITS
Q’s Ministry / BHITS is a nonprofit religious, scientific, educational, and community-service organization developing books, workbooks, applications, educational resources, technical manuals, spiritual publications, community materials, and multilingual content.
Through its Publishing & Digital Media Laboratory, the organization develops and prepares academic textbooks, instructional workbooks, spiritual works, professional manuals, research-based educational materials, digital resources, and print-on-demand publications.
The opportunity provides supervised, project-based experience across the complete publishing process, including reading, manuscript evaluation, editing, proofreading, formatting, production preparation, metadata development, digital publication, print-on-demand preparation, quality assurance, and distribution support.
Opportunity Overview
The Publishing, Editorial & Digital Media Volunteer Trainee will assist with supervised publishing projects while developing practical experience in both digital and print production.
The volunteer may work with manuscripts at different stages of development, from early editorial review through final publication. Assignments will be based on the volunteer’s academic background, demonstrated skills, interests, availability, and the needs of current Q’s Ministry projects.
The role may include work involving:
Reading and manuscript review: Reading manuscripts carefully; identifying unclear, repetitive, incomplete, inconsistent, or misplaced material; comparing manuscript content with outlines and editorial instructions; confirming that chapters follow the intended sequence; and preparing organized editorial observations.
Developmental editing: Helping improve organization, chapter structure, continuity, clarity, instructional progression, transitions, and consistency while preserving the author’s intended meaning and voice.
Copyediting: Reviewing grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, capitalization, terminology, headings, citations, references, tables, captions, and style consistency.
Proofreading: Reviewing near-final files for typographical errors, missing text, duplicated content, incorrect page references, inconsistent formatting, broken links, misplaced figures, and other production errors.
Formatting and layout: Preparing manuscripts for digital and print publication; applying paragraph and heading styles; formatting tables, figures, captions, footnotes, references, page numbers, margins, section breaks, headers, footers, and tables of contents.
Print-publishing preparation: Helping prepare publication files for print-on-demand platforms, including page-size verification, margin and bleed review, image-resolution checks, cover-interior coordination, final-file inspection, and proof-copy review.
Digital-publishing preparation: Assisting with PDF, EPUB, e-book, accessible digital-document, and downloadable-resource preparation; checking links, navigation, bookmarks, metadata, and device readability.
Publishing-system support: Helping organize manuscripts, production versions, editorial records, publication checklists, file-naming systems, archives, and approved content-management workflows.
Metadata and cataloging: Assisting with titles, subtitles, author and contributor information, book descriptions, keywords, ISBN records, BISAC categories, edition information, copyright pages, and distribution metadata.
Publishing-platform workflows: Supporting supervised preparation for Shopify digital-product listings, Lulu print-on-demand distribution, and other approved publishing platforms.
Quality assurance: Comparing source manuscripts with formatted editions; confirming that content has not been omitted; checking tables of contents, headings, page numbers, links, figures, references, and final production files.
Marketing and distribution support: Assisting with book descriptions, author biographies, catalog copy, launch materials, search terms, product-page content, publication announcements, and basic sales-performance review.
Multilingual publication support: Helping review layout, transliteration, language consistency, punctuation, alignment, and readability in multilingual publications when qualified to do so.
