Hospice Music Companion Volunteer

Emmanuel Hospice is a non-profit hospice organization located in Grand Rapids, MI. Our goal is to provide exemplary spiritual and physical care creating a peaceful experience for the dying and their loved ones. We serve folks within a 50-mile radius of our downtown office wherever they call "home". This could be a nursing facility, assisted living space, or home setting.

We are looking for individuals to visit with folks on our service as Music Companionship volunteers. Music Companionship volunteers bring so much joy to individuals at the end of life by offering one-on-one musical engagement and socialization. Music reduces stress, anxiety, and brings a lot of comfort to folks during their time with us. Volunteers offer musical companionship by playing instruments, singing, playing songs people love, reminiscing about music and how it has influenced people's lives, and providing general companionship. Visits happen one-on-one as requested by the patient and their care team. They are usually about 1 hour or less and days/times are flexible (days, evenings, weekends).

General Qualifications:

• 18+ years
• Valid driver's license
• Auto Insurance
• Background Check and Fingerprinting
• TB Testing
• Annual Flu and original Covid vaccine or medical or religious exemption
• Flexible online and in-person training - we work with your schedule! (about 8 hours total)
• General friendly demeanor
• Ability to communicate well and engage with new people
• Comfortability in nursing home, living facility, and various home settings

Music Qualifications:

• Have a general knowledge of music, music principles
• Ability to play an instrument (guitar, ukulele, harp, etc.)
• Ability to meet individuals where they're at cognitively and play music that will soothe and engage them
