Nonprofit
Textbook Writing Collaborators — Environmental Neurotoxicology
Details
Description
Company Description
The Ben-Abraham Center for Environmental Health Sciences (BAEHS) is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation dedicated to advancing scientific understanding of how environmental exposures affect human health, with a particular interest in environmental toxicology, neurotoxicology, and nervous system function.
BAEHS integrates environmental chemistry, toxicology, neuroscience, epidemiology, and computational approaches to investigate mechanisms of environmentally associated disease and neurological dysfunction. Through research, scientific collaboration, and educational initiatives, BAEHS seeks to develop rigorous, evidence-based resources for students, researchers, educators, and the broader public.
Role Description
BAEHS is seeking volunteer scientific collaborators with specialized expertise in relevant scientific disciplines to contribute to the development of a scholarly textbook tentatively titled Environmental Neurotoxicology: From Exposure to Neural Dysfunction.
The textbook will examine how environmental chemicals and other environmental agents affect the nervous system, integrating chemical properties, environmental exposure, toxicokinetics, biotransformation, toxicodynamics, neurobiology, neuropathology, and neurological outcomes.
We welcome collaborators who can contribute scientific expertise, critically evaluate research literature, develop textbook sections, and help communicate complex scientific concepts accurately and clearly. Contributors may focus on their areas of specialization, with responsibilities tailored to their expertise and availability.
Areas of Expertise Sought
We welcome expressions of interest from individuals with experience in one or more of the following fields:
- Environmental Toxicology or Toxicology: Chemical hazards, mechanisms of toxicity, dose–response relationships, and environmental toxicants.
- Neurotoxicology: Mechanisms of nervous system injury, neurotoxicants, neuronal dysfunction, and neurological outcomes.
- Environmental and Organic Chemistry: Chemical properties, environmental transformations, reaction mechanisms, and relationships between chemical structure and toxicity.
- Toxicokinetics and Biotransformation: Absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes, bioactivation, detoxification, and reactive metabolites.
- Neurobiology and Neuroscience: Neuronal signaling, synaptic function, neurodevelopment, glial biology, and nervous system physiology.
- Neuropathology: Neuronal injury, neuroinflammation, blood–brain barrier disruption, demyelination, neurodegeneration, and cellular pathology.
- Environmental Epidemiology and Exposure Science: Human exposure assessment, epidemiological evidence, vulnerable populations, and exposure–outcome relationships.
- Computational Toxicology and Toxicoinformatics: Quantitative structure–activity relationships, predictive modeling, toxicogenomics, high-throughput screening, and computational approaches to toxicity assessment.
- Molecular and Cellular Toxicology: Oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, receptor-mediated toxicity, gene expression, cell signaling, and molecular mechanisms of neurotoxicity.
Candidates with interdisciplinary expertise are particularly welcome or closely related to those listed.
Responsibilities
Depending on their scientific background and interests, collaborators may:
- Research, critically evaluate, and synthesize peer-reviewed scientific literature.
- Contribute textbook sections or chapters within their areas of expertise.
- Explain scientific mechanisms, chemical processes, and experimental findings accurately.
- Develop or recommend appropriate figures, tables, mechanistic diagrams, and case studies.
- Verify scientific claims and references and follow established citation and research integrity standards.
- Review relevant contributions and provide constructive scientific feedback.
- Collaborate with other contributors to ensure scientific accuracy and consistency throughout the textbook.
Qualifications
- Academic training, research experience, or professional expertise in at least one relevant scientific discipline.
- Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate scientific literature and interpret research findings.
- Strong scientific writing or editing skills, or a willingness to contribute to collaborative scientific writing.
- Attention to detail, sound scientific judgment, and commitment to research integrity.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with contributors from other disciplines.
Graduate students, postgraduate researchers, faculty members, experienced scientific writers, and other qualified individuals are encouraged to apply. A specific degree or prior textbook publication is not required if the applicant can demonstrate relevant expertise.
Collaboration Details
- Position type: Volunteer scientific collaboration
- Compensation: Currently unpaid; future funding or compensation is not guaranteed
- Work arrangement: Remote
- Time commitment: Flexible, based on mutual agreement and project needs
- Participation: Contributors may focus on selected scientific topics, sections, or chapters
Authorship, acknowledgment, intellectual property, and publication arrangements will be discussed and documented in advance. Authorship will be based on qualifying scholarly contributions and applicable publication standards.
How to Apply
Please email baehslab@gmail.com with the subject line Environmental Neurotoxicology Textbook Collaboration.
Include a brief introduction, your relevant scientific expertise, research or publication experience, the topics you would be interested in contributing to, and your anticipated availability. A CV or resume, publication list, or relevant writing sample should be submitted.
