About Writers Read
Writers Read is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that creates and promotes performance opportunities for writers through curated live and digital programs. We provide a high-quality platform for true, personal stories, 650 words, five minutes long, read aloud before an audience at our live shows at City Winery New York and other venues.
Our work extends beyond the stage through the Writers Read Podcast and a growing digital presence, connecting audiences with powerful storytelling across platforms. In a time when creative voices need space more than ever, Writers Read exists to amplify those voices and build community through the craft of storytelling.
Opportunity Overview
Writers Read is seeking 5 to 10 Media Production Volunteers to support our live events, podcast production, and digital content initiatives.
This is a remote-friendly opportunity open to volunteers from anywhere in the world. Contributors can support video editing, audio production, social media content, podcast production, and graphic design from their own location.
For volunteers based in the Tri-State area (NY, NJ, CT), there is also an opportunity to assist with in-person live event production, including camera operation, live audio support, and on-site coordination.
This role is ideal for individuals who want to contribute their creative or technical skills to a mission-driven arts organization while helping bring meaningful stories to life across live and digital platforms.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Depending on experience, interest, and availability, volunteers may contribute to one or more of the following areas:
Video Production and Editing
- Edit live event recordings for platforms like YouTube
- Create short-form video content for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts
- Develop promotional and highlight content to support Writers Read programming
- Organize and manage media assets for ongoing use
Audio and Podcast Production
- Edit, assemble, and mix podcast episodes
- Assist with sound design, voice-over sessions, and audio cleanup
- Review recordings to ensure consistent quality
- Prepare final episodes for publishing across podcast platforms
Content Creation and Social Media
- Create engaging short-form content to expand audience reach
- Support ongoing content strategies across digital platforms
- Contribute creative ideas for storytelling, promotion, and engagement
Graphic Design and Marketing Support
- Design promotional graphics using Canva or similar tools
- Create assets for events, podcast releases, and social media
- Help maintain visual consistency and brand identity
Live Event Production (Tri-State Area Only)
- Support setup and execution of live Writers Read events
- Assist with camera operation and multi-camera setups
- Help with live audio production and technical coordination
- Contribute to smooth event operations from start to finish
Qualifications
We are looking for volunteers with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Video editing, long-form and/or short-form
- Audio editing, podcast production, or sound mixing
- Social media content creation
- Graphic design, especially Canva
- Live event production (for local volunteers)
- Media asset organization and file management
In addition, ideal volunteers will have:
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Ability to manage time and meet agreed-upon deadlines
- Interest in storytelling, writing, and the arts
