    Description

Become a role model as a GOTR Coach!

Help a Girl Discover Her Strength. Become a Girls on the Run Coach!

You don't have to be a runner to change a girl's life. You just have to show up.

Girls on the Run Shenandoah Valley is looking for caring, enthusiastic volunteers to coach girls in grades 3–8 during our 10-week fall and spring seasons. Through fun games, engaging discussions, and physical activity, coaches help girls build confidence, strengthen friendships, develop healthy habits, and realize their limitless potential.

If you've ever wanted to make a lasting difference in a young person's life, this is your opportunity.

Why Coach with Girls on the Run?

As a volunteer coach, you'll help girls:

    • Build confidence and self-esteem
    • Develop healthy habits
    • Navigate friendships and challenges
    • Learn teamwork and leadership
    • Discover they are capable of more than they imagined

At the same time, you'll build connections, develop leadership skills, and become part of a supportive community that believes every girl deserves to thrive.

Many coaches tell us they receive just as much from the experience as the girls do.

    No Experience? No Problem!

One of the biggest misconceptions about Girls on the Run is that coaches have to be runners or athletes.

    You do NOT need to:

    • Be a runner
    • Be athletic
    • Have coaching or teaching experience
    • Create lesson plans
    • Coach alone

You simply need to enjoy encouraging young people and be willing to show up with a positive attitude.

    We'll provide everything else.

    We've Got You Covered

Every Girls on the Run coach receives:

    • A nationally developed, evidence-based curriculum
    • Self-paced online training and an engaging in-person training
    • All lesson plans and equipment
    • CPR/First Aid certification (if needed)
    • Ongoing support from Girls on the Run staff
    • A coaching team—you'll work alongside 2–3 other volunteer coaches

You're never expected to figure it out on your own.

    Time Commitment

    Volunteer coaches commit to:

    • Two 90-minute practices each week for one 10-week season
    • Approximately 3½ hours of online training
    • One 3-hour in-person coach training
    • Minimal preparation before each practice
    • Celebrating with your team at our season-ending Girls on the Run 5K

We'll work with you to find a team near your home or workplace that fits your schedule.

    Everyone Is Welcome

    We encourage applications from:

    • Teachers and school staff
    • Parents and caregivers
    • College students
    • Retirees
    • Healthcare professionals
    • Community members
    • Corporate volunteer groups
    • Men who want to be positive role models for girls

Whether you're volunteering for the first time or have years of experience, we'd love to welcome you.
