DIRECT PATIENT CARE VOLUNTEERS
Direct volunteers interact with patients and families, offering companionship, emotional support, caregiver relief by helping with daily tasks.
Ideal qualities:
- Empathy, patience, and active listening skills
- Comfort being around individuals with serious illness
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect boundaries
Responsibilities may include:
- Providing companionship through conversation, reading, or simply being present
- Providing caregiver relief (allowing them time to rest or run errands, or even running errands for them)
- Assisting with light activities such as letter writing, music, or hobbies
- Providing emotional support to patients and families
Indirect (Administrative & Support) Volunteers
Indirect volunteers support hospice operations without direct patient interaction.
Ideal qualities:
- Organized and detail-oriented
- Comfortable with basic administrative tasks
- Team-oriented and dependable
Responsibilities may include:
- Office support (filing, data entry, answering phones)
- Preparing mailings, newsletters, or educational materials
- Assisting with event planning activities
- Making check-in calls to families or bereavement support outreach
- Organizing supplies or helping with special projects
Ongoing support and education are provided throughout your volunteer experience.
