    Description

    Health Communications Specialist, Remote · 4–6 hours/week · Ongoing

Healthful Stories is a Seattle-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that conducts in-depth interviews with people living with chronic and complex health conditions. We exist to document the real patient journey: the delays, the barriers, and the turning points in a way that will have the greatest impact on those living with similar illnesses. Our interviews are structured and informational, not just inspirational. We don't ask people how they stay positive. We ask what happened, because it's the information, decisions, and resources that can help others on their own journeys.

We're looking for a Health Communications Specialist to help us deliver the written voice that connects our work to the people who need to hear it: our wonderful team of volunteers, our ardent supporters, and the broader public. This role works across three audiences: crafting our regular newsletter, coordinating internal communications that keep a growing volunteer team informed and engaged with our work and progress, and shaping external communications that represent Healthful Stories credibly to partners, media, and the public. This role serves as great preparation for a career in Corporate Affairs or Public Affairs, or for those already in communications or public affairs roles but who would like to lend their expertise to a growing, mission-driven organization.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Writing and producing a regular newsletter for volunteers, donors, and supporters
    • Drafting internal communications that keep our growing volunteer teams (Web, Fundraising, Policy, Research) aligned and informed
    • Shaping external communications such as press-style statements, partner-facing materials, and public messaging in coordination with our President
    • Maintaining a consistent voice and message discipline across all three communication types
    • Collaborating with our Social Media Manager, Fundraiser, and Health Policy & Coalition Manager to ensure messaging stays aligned across channels
    • Helping develop messaging for major moments such as campaign launches, policy positions, program milestones

    You bring:

    • Strong writing skills across formats such as newsletters, internal memos, and public-facing statements each require a different register, and you can move between them
    • Interest in a career path (or already active) in Corporate Affairs, Public Affairs, communications, or public health messaging
    • Comfort translating complex or sensitive material for different audiences without losing accuracy or nuance
    • Attention to detail and reliability with a regular publishing cadence
    • Experience in journalism, communications, public health, or a related field is a plus but not required

What you'll gain: Direct experience in multi-audience communications work focused on internal alignment, external representation, and stakeholder-facing messaging, all within one role. You'll build a portfolio of newsletters and communications materials, work closely with our President on our public voice, and gain exposure to how a mission-driven organization manages its reputation and relationships across many different audiences.
