    Description

    Cancer Patient Liaison Volunteer at Green Hills Road Cancer Center assist with the following tasks:

      1. Maintain treatment, exam, front waiting, and radiation waiting rooms by straightening magazines, discarding outdated or worn magazines/pamphlets/fliers, etc.

        2.Help keep rooms tidy by throwing out or discarding cups or litter.

        3.Make coffee as needed and restock coffee items.

        4.Stock beverage cart with items such as cups, straws, stir sticks, coffee, condiments for coffee, juice, soda, and water from Volunteer Office.

        5.Be sure that beverage cart stays cleaned and sanitized.

        6.Restock drinks and snacks as needed nutrition room

        7.Sanitize and clean off chairs, tables, wheelchairs, etc. regularly during your shift.

        8.Help escort patients in wheelchairs and who are unsteady on their feet to their destination. *Unless patient has an oxygen tank, then please call for a staff member or a transporter to help.

        9.Visit patients and visitors in the front waiting room and treatment room:

        a.Introduce yourself and explain that you are a volunteer.

        b.Ask how they are doing that day and if there is anything you can do for them.

        c.Tell them you have time to visit with them if they would like someone to sit with them for a while.

        d.Report any requests that you are not sure about to the staff for follow-up.

        e.If staff member needs to speak to patient, stay aware and excuse yourself from the room if needed.

        f.Offer coffee or water.

        In the treatment room:

        g.Offer additional available refreshments such as juices and snacks.

        h.Offer a warm blanket.

        i.Offer DVD players, books, puzzles, games, a craft project or other diversion items.

        10.Report to a nurse anything significant that a patient or family member says especially if it is a complaint.

        11.Offer assistance to staff when not busy with patients and visitors or between activities.

        12.Use phrases such as "Is there anything else I can do for you today?" or "Is there anything else I can do to make you more comfortable?"The main point is to leave them with the thought that we are here to meet their needs in any way that we can.
