    Description

Legislate for Life Foundation is seeking creative writers and aspiring journalists interested in telling stories about farmers, rural communities, agriculture, and the challenges and opportunities affecting rural life. This role offers substantial creative freedom. Volunteers can write opinion pieces, investigative or research-based articles, interviews, personal narratives, profiles of farmers, human-interest stories, commentary, and other forms of journalism. Writing can be serious, hopeful, critical, humorous, emotional, or provocative, provided it remains relevant to farmers and rural communities and is grounded in responsible, accurate reporting.

Volunteers are encouraged to develop their own story ideas, explore different writing styles, and cover topics they genuinely care about. Whether highlighting a community success, examining an overlooked problem, challenging public perceptions, or sharing a farmer's personal experience, the goal is to bring greater attention to rural voices and issues that deserve to be heard.

    Responsibilities:

    • Pitch and develop original story ideas related to farmers, agriculture, and rural communities.
    • Write op-eds, interviews, feature articles, research-based pieces, profiles, commentary, and other forms of journalism.
    • Interview farmers, rural residents, researchers, advocates, and other relevant individuals when appropriate.
    • Research topics using credible sources and verify factual claims.
    • Explore topics such as farmer mental health, rural healthcare access, agricultural policy, economic pressures, community resilience, and rural development.
    • Develop an individual writing style and experiment with different approaches to storytelling.
    • Revise articles based on feedback and collaborate with the communications team on publication.
    • Propose independent projects and pursue stories that align with the organization's mission.
