Supervisor: Director of Workforce Development and KSC staff in charge of event
Goal or Purpose of the Position:
Kamin Science Center connects people and science, igniting curiosity that endures for a lifetime.
Volunteers will serve as ambassadors for Kamin Science Center during events and contribute to our mission to educate and inspire guests through our events.
Events include, but may not be limited to:
Ticketed events – year-round, weekend and weekdays, daytime and evening. Include events such as 21+ Nights, 18+ Sensory Nights, July 4 Fireworks event, and more
Value-added programs - year-round, weekend and weekdays, daytime. Additional programming and activities are available to general admission guests. Includes event such as Snowball Day, River Weekend, Space Out Weekend, Scientists Like Me, LGBTQ Stem Day, and MessFest.
STEM events – fall and spring, weekdays, daytime. STEM events for middle and high school students. Includes events such as SciTech Days, SciYinz Squad Competitions, and the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
Community Events - year-round, weekend and weekdays, daytime and evening. Join Kamin Science Center team members as we participate in community events around our area to bring science into local communities.
Misc/Other Events - year-round, weekend and weekdays, daytime and evening. May include events and projects such as group season assistance, lobby assistance during peak times, data entry projects, photo shoots, and other events and programs.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities may vary from event to event.
Greet visitors in a friendly manner. Assist with crowd control and direct guests as needed.
Engage in informal, positive, informational, and personalized visitor interactions.
Assist with activities and/or demonstrations that cover various science concepts and topics.
Maintain a high degree of situational awareness and bring any problems or customer service issues to the attention of the KSC staff person in charge of an event.
Assist with light set-up and/or tear-down duties.
Time Commitment:
Museum Event volunteers must volunteer for at least 4 events per 6 months.
Shifts are typically 3 to 4 hours in length. Some events may have longer shifts.
Volunteers will be notified when a Kamin Science Center event requires volunteer support and can choose to assist with the opportunities that fit into their schedules.
Qualifications:
Must be 18 or older.
Must be comfortable speaking to visitors at any time, occasionally without prompting.
Must be comfortable working with both large and small visitor numbers.
Enthusiasm and friendly personality
Volunteers who participate in Community Events must be able to provide their own transportation to and from these offsite events.

Clearances
Upon acceptance into the program, all volunteers are required to provide and pay for background checks and clearances. Act 33 and 34 Clearances are free for volunteers.
Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for at least 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34).
Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for less than 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34) plus an FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 114).
