Be a Source of Peace in Final Moments: Volunteer for Transitions Hospice Vigils

    Position Type: In-Person (Bedside Presence)

    Time Commitment: On-Call / 2 to 4-Hour Shifts

    Organization: Transition's Hospice

🌟 The Power of Being Present in the Final Hours

At Transitions, we hold a deeply rooted belief: no one should have to die alone.

When our medical staff anticipates that a patient is transitioning, we mobilize a dedicated team to sit bedside around the clock. As a Vigil Volunteer, you will provide vital emotional and social support to patients and their families right at the time of death. Your mission isn't about doing or saying the perfect thing—it is about making a profoundly difficult experience easier simply by being a calm, reassuring presence in the room.

The impact our Vigil Volunteers have on patients and families during these sacred moments is truly indescribable.

🕒 How the Vigil Program Works

Because the timeline of transitioning is unique for everyone, this role operates on an on-call, as-needed basis:

    • Localization: You will be notified specifically when a patient residing in your local area is actively dying.
    • Flexible Availability: Once notified, you will be asked if you are available to step in for a 2-hour or 4-hour shift to keep the patient company.
    • Around-the-Clock Support: Shifts are coordinated to ensure continuous, bedside companionship during the patient's final hours.

    👥 A Unique, Step-by-Step Path to Serving

Due to the immense importance of this commitment, it is essential that our Vigil Volunteers are deeply reliable and fully understand the physical and emotional nuances of the dying process. To ensure you feel completely safe, confident, and prepared, we utilize a tiered onboarding path:

    1. Begin as a Companionship Volunteer: All volunteers start by visiting stable patients, providing friendly conversation, and offering standard socialization.
    2. Gain Experience: Serve as a Companionship Volunteer for a minimum of three months to get comfortable with the hospice environment.
    3. Receive Advanced Training: Once you feel ready after your initial service period, you can elect to undergo our specialized, advanced training curriculum focused on end-of-life vigil care.
    4. An official Certificate of Specialty Completion for your volunteer portfolio once training is complete.

📋 Who Is Right for This Role?

This deeply rewarding opportunity is well-suited for individuals with high emotional maturity, including retired healthcare workers, spiritual caregivers, or anyone who possesses a quiet, grounded demeanor. We look for volunteers who are:

    • Highly Dependable: Families count on your presence when you accept a shift.
    • Comfortable with Silence: Holding space and offering a quiet, peaceful environment is often the greatest gift you can give.
    • Respectful of Diverse Grief: You can support families of all backgrounds and cultures without judgment during their time of loss.

🚀 Take the First Step Toward Making an Indescribable Impact

You don't need a medical background to bring immense peace to someone's final hours—you just need a compassionate heart and the willingness to be there.
