    Description

Human connection is especially important at the end of life. Being present with someone as they transition is one of the most profound and intimate human experiences. With the goal of ensuring that no one dies alone, Autumn Hospice is seeking volunteers to sit vigil at the bedside of patients in their final stages of life.

Vigil volunteers offer companionship, comfort, and a steady presence during the hours or days immediately preceding a patient’s death. They may soften the environment by dimming lights, playing quiet music, reading aloud, or simply sitting in silence and holding a hand.

Vigil volunteers work in shifts to ensure patients are not alone when family members are unavailable or need respite. In some cases, volunteers sit with patients who have no family at all. For those individuals, the presence of another human being can provide a deep sense of comfort and dignity.

    Position Requirements

    Vigil volunteers must:

    • Be 18 years of age or older
    • Be comfortable with the realities of death and dying
    • Demonstrate strong communication and active listening skills
    • Maintain composure in emotional or stressful situations
    • Offer open, nonjudgmental support, allowing the dying person to share whatever they are experiencing
    • Be willing to accept assignments on short notice and have some scheduling flexibility
    • Have a valid driver’s license, insurance, and 24/7 access to a vehicle
    • (Preferred but not required) Previous hospice experience
