Description
City of Irvine Older Adults Services are looking for potential volunteers to provide one-on-one support to older adults in navigating and using smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
Duties:
- Provide patient, friendly, and respectful assistance to older adults with basic technological needs.
- Answer general technology questions in a clear and easy-to-understand way.
- Encourage and support older adults at their own pace without taking over their devices.
- Maintain a welcoming and supportive environment for all participants.
- Help with smartphones, tablets, and laptops, including tasks such as:
- Making phone calls and sending texts or emails
- Downloading and using apps
- Connecting to Wi-Fi and troubleshooting connectivity issues
- Adjusting device settings (volume, display, accessibility features, etc.)
- Navigating websites and online services
Hours:
- Weekly for 2 hours in the morning, Monday or Tuesday.
Skills, Abilities and Knowledge:
- Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with participants and staff.
- Comfortable using smartphones, tablets, and laptops (iOS, Android, and/or Windows/Mac).
- Able to explain technology in simple, easy-to-follow steps.
- Fluency in another language is a plus but not required.
Requirements:
- Must be reliable and willing to commit to scheduled volunteer shifts.
- Must be patient and respectful.
- Previous teaching, tutoring, or customer service experience is a plus but not required.
- Access to a cell phone. Checks email frequently.
Additional Requirements:
- Complete appropriate paperwork.
- Pass a background check, paid for by the City of Irvine.
- Abide by the City of Irvine’s Patron’s Code of Conduct and the Older Adult Services Code of Conduct.
Benefits:
After completing a minimum of 20 hours in a calendar year, volunteers will receive an invitation to our annual Volunteer Recognition event.
