MET Crusaders serves patients diagnosed with cancer with rare mutations known as MET alterations. These patients often get a hard diagnosis and very little support at the same time. Our website and social media are how we reach them. A personal connection to cancer is not required, but it tends to make the work meaningful in a different way.
We are looking for a volunteer web developer with strong WordPress, HTML, and CSS skills to work through a prioritized list of changes and additions to our website, largely independently. PHP experience is a plus. We estimate 20-30 hours of work.
About MET Crusaders
MET Crusaders is a program of ICAN (International Cancer Advocacy Network), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports biomarker-specific cancer patient advocacy groups. We serve people diagnosed with MET-altered cancers, including MET exon 14 skipping, MET amplification, MET overexpression, and MET fusion, regardless of tumor type.
We're volunteer-run and global, and our members include patients, care partners, and families.
Scope
We are looking for a volunteer to help update and improve metcrusaders.org. This is an organized project: content decisions have largely been made, we have a detailed change log ready to work from, a staging environment set up so no changes go live untested, and a current volunteer developer who knows the site's structure and can orient whoever comes on board.
Skills Needed
If you have made WordPress themes or websites from scratch, or have strong PHP skills, that background would let you tackle some of the bigger structural changes on our list. But a solid working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and WordPress is enough to contribute meaningfully.
Time Commitment
The work focuses on the changes needed across the site. We estimate 20-30 hours of work, depending on skill level and pace. We're flexible about pace and scheduling, and happy to work asynchronously.
What we need most is someone with the right technical skills who can work independently and communicate clearly with a small all-volunteer team.
How We Work
Our team communicates primarily by email. We have a development environment and a staging environment set up in WP Engine. Our current developer is familiar with the site's structure and can answer technical questions and hand off context.
We'll share our detailed change log with anyone who expresses serious interest. We ask that applicants provide a brief description of relevant experience and 1-2 links to WordPress sites you've worked on or another work sample.
Who We Serve
Our members are cancer patients, care partners, and families navigating a serious and often rare diagnosis. Many are newly diagnosed and come to our site in a moment of fear and urgency. The work you do directly affects how well we can reach and support them. We take that seriously, and we hope you will too.
To Apply
If you're interested in volunteering, please submit a brief note about your relevant background and 1-2 links to WordPress sites you've worked on.
