    Description

    Humanity Hale, based in Kailua Kona, Hawai’i, is a trauma-informed, heart-led nonprofit dedicated to supporting youth experiencing generational trauma through culturally grounded, community-driven programs. Our work blends mental health care, art therapy, Hawaiian cultural practices, and life skills education, rooted in the land and guided by love.

    Position Summary

    The Vice President of the Board of Directors supports the President in providing effective governance and strategic leadership for Humanity Hale. The Vice President serves as a key member of the Board's executive leadership team, helping ensure continuity of leadership, fostering strong board engagement, and advancing the organization's mission to provide trauma-informed, culturally grounded support for Hawaiʻi Island's foster and at-promise youth.

    The Vice President acts on behalf of the President when necessary and works closely with the Executive Director, Board officers, and committee chairs to strengthen organizational governance, board effectiveness, and community impact.

    Key Responsibilities

    Board Leadership & Governance

    • Assist the Board President in carrying out the responsibilities of the office.
    • Preside over Board and Executive Committee meetings in the President's absence.
    • Support the development of Board meeting agendas in partnership with the President and Executive Director.
    • Promote effective governance practices and encourage active participation from all Board members.
    • Help ensure compliance with the organization's bylaws, policies, and governance standards.

    Strategic Leadership

    • Assist the Board in implementing Humanity Hale's strategic plan.
    • Participate in long-term planning discussions and organizational goal setting.
    • Help identify opportunities for organizational growth, innovation, and community partnerships.
    • Support initiatives that strengthen the organization's sustainability and mission impact.

    Partnership with the Executive Director

    • Maintain a collaborative working relationship with the Executive Director.
    • Provide guidance and support while respecting the Executive Director's responsibility for day-to-day operations.
    • Serve as a resource to the Executive Director and leadership team as appropriate.
    • Assist in leadership transition and succession planning efforts.

    Board Development

    • Support recruitment, orientation, and mentoring of new Board members.
    • Encourage ongoing Board education and professional development.
    • Help cultivate a positive, collaborative, and inclusive Board culture.
    • Promote accountability, engagement, and strong attendance among Board members.

    Committee Leadership

    • Serve as an ex officio member of Board committees as assigned.
    • Provide oversight and support to committee chairs.
    • Assist committees in achieving annual goals and reporting progress to the Board.
    • Lead special projects or task forces as requested by the President or Board.

    Fundraising & Community Engagement

    • Actively participate in fundraising initiatives and donor stewardship.
    • Represent Humanity Hale at community events, meetings, and public functions.
    • Help cultivate relationships with donors, community leaders, businesses, and partner organizations.
    • Serve as an ambassador for Humanity Hale's mission, vision, and values.

    Leadership Continuity

    • Be prepared to assume the duties of the President if the President is unavailable or unable to serve.
    • Support effective leadership transitions and organizational continuity.
    • Assist with succession planning for Board officers.

    Qualifications

    Preferred qualifications include:

    • Previous nonprofit board or governance experience.
    • Demonstrated leadership in business, nonprofit, education, healthcare, government, or community organizations.
    • Strong organizational, communication, and facilitation skills.
    • Ability to build consensus and foster collaborative decision-making.
    • Experience with fundraising, donor relations, or community engagement.
    • Financial literacy sufficient to understand nonprofit financial reports and budgets.
    • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive leadership.
    • Passion for supporting children, youth, families, and community well-being.

    Time Commitment

    • Attend all regularly scheduled Board meetings.
    • Participate in Executive Committee and assigned committee meetings.
    • Meet periodically with the Board President and Executive Director.
    • Attend fundraising events, community outreach activities, and strategic planning sessions.
    • Be available to assume additional leadership responsibilities when needed.

    Estimated commitment: 6–12 hours per month, with additional time during fundraising campaigns, strategic planning, or when serving in the President's absence.

    Term of Service

    The Vice President serves in accordance with Humanity Hale's bylaws and Board-approved term limits and is elected by the Board of Directors.
