    Description

    Lighthouse Guild is the leading not-for-profit healthcare organization dedicated to addressing and preventing vision loss. Our mission is to provide exceptional services that inspire people who are visually impaired to attain their goals. With Lighthouse Guild, people who are at risk for, or affected by, vision loss have access to all the resources necessary to lead full, independent and productive lives. We provide services, research and education, and advocate to help people with low vision and blindness. Our vision is a world in which no person is limited by their visual capacity.

    Summary

    We are looking for a skilled writer and editor interested in supporting the Stephen T. Pearlman Volunteer Center. Their responsibility will be to write articles and/or ensure the accuracy and quality of the Department’s written materials. They would report directly to the Chief Volunteer Officer.

    Date: Upon agreement by the parties

    Location: Virtual or on site at 250 West 64th Street, New York, NY

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Conduct interviews and prepare the articles
    • Edit copy and improve it for publication
    • Educate writers on best practices
    • Identify ways to improve the flow of materials
    • Advise writers on content
    • Adhere to writing best practices.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or English
    • Strong writing and proofreading skills
    • Great attention to details
    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Ability to give constructive feedback
    • Ability to create stories
    • Comfortable with computer systems, software and applications (email, Microsoft word, Zoom, etc.).

    Detail of service opportunity: This position will begin upon agreement by the parties. The time required will vary based upon the number of documents that need to be reviewed. We will be able to establish a schedule and system to make the best use of everyone’s time.

    Attire: Business Casual Attire, (no jeans, no sneakers)

    Directions

    Getting to the Lighthouse Guild: By public transportation you can take the A, B, or C train to 59th and walk two avenues west to Amsterdam and 4 blocks over to 64th and Amsterdam or you can take the 1 train and get off at 66th Street and Lincoln Center use the 65th street exit. Walk West (toward Julliard) to Amsterdam Avenue (LaGuardia H.S. & Martin Luther King H.S. are on the corner).

    On 64th Street, walk toward West End Avenue (the Lincoln Center Library and parking garage will be behind you.) The Lighthouse Guild is at the end of the block on the left-hand side of the street past the playground and apartment buildings.
