Advisory Committee for Grant Programs

The A.J. Muste Foundation is a nonprofit charitable foundation established in 1974 to honor the legacy of pacifist leader A.J. Muste and to further his belief that nonviolent action is the means to achieve social and economic justice. We do this by providing grants, resources and a wide range of support to activist organizations that use nonviolent strategies to oppose war and promote justice and by publishing and distributing educational materials about nonviolence.

Specifically, the Muste Foundation maintains and implements a variety of grant, fiscal sponsorship to support grassroots social justice, nonviolence and counter militarism educational and organizing projects in NYC and around the nation.

Advisory Committee (non salaried voluntary position)

The Advisory Committee plays a key role in informing the Muste Foundation’s grantmaking process.

Responsibilities and Requirements of Advisory Committee Members include:

• Recommending prospective nonviole nt radical grassroots grantee organizations
• Identifying emerging threats and urgent community needs for on-the-ground groups
• Identifying grassroots activist groups, organizations, and individuals that the Foundation may partner with
• Strengthening regional and movement-based relationships
• Ensuring the Foundation remains accountable to frontline communities
• Contribute at least 8 hrs per month to responsibilities & hold monthly meetings as needed.
• Consulted throughout the year on grants or anything related to activism including Muste Foundation events

What we are looking for:

• Demonstrated experience in grassroots activism, community organizing, movement building, advocacy efforts, and understanding the needs of frontline communities.
• Deep, trusted relationships with grassroots organizations and community leaders.
• Familiarity with local, regional, or national social justice movements and organizing strategies.
• Ability to assess opportunities and challenges facing communities most impacted by social, economic, environmental, or political inequities.
• Knowledge of emerging grassroots organizations, campaigns, and movement-building efforts.
• Ability to bring a community-informed perspective to discussions, recommendations, and funding decisions.
