    Description

    Are you goal oriented? Do you enjoy helping others reach their potential? Become an Adult English Mentor! Mentors will be paired with an intermediate/advanced adult English learner for a period of 6 months and support the learner in making progress towards a long term goal. Additional clearances and trainings are required prior to being paired with a student. The average time commitment is 2-2.5 hours a week. 1 to 1.5 for instruction and 30 min- 1 hr. for planning.

    Responsibilities

    • Meet a minimum of one day a week for 1 hour.

    • Work with the student on a project or series of mini projects to support a specific career goal.

    • Provide a caring and welcoming environment.

    • Communicate with the student directly regarding confirmation of sessions and any schedule changes.

    • Plan and administer lessons during scheduled mentoring time.

    • Keep a record of student and volunteer hours.

    • Commit to working with a student for an extended amount of time (6 months)

    • Flexibility

    • Ability and comfort level to help a student in a specific domain. Examples may include but are not limited to; career exploration, volunteering in the community, entrepreneurship, transitioning to higher education or basic computer skills.

    Location and Scheduling

    The volunteer coordinator will work to pair tutors and students who have similar availability. It is preferred that volunteers are open to meeting on zoom or in person. If the tutor and volunteer elect to meet in person, it must be a public meeting space, for example a local library or Catholic Charities offices.
