Based in Silver Spring, Maryland, Action Youth Media (AYM) is an after-school arts nonprofit seeking new members for our Board of Directors.
AYM empowers Montgomery County students by teaching them the technical media skills needed to document and address local civic issues. Our mission focuses on empowerment and growth, preparing young storytellers for professional success whether they choose to attend college or enter the field directly. By fostering multicultural understanding and civic action, we help youth become the next generation of community leaders.
Board members are driven by the need to prepare students, especially those who have historically been left behind, for careers in the future economy by providing access to high-quality media training, mentorship, and leadership opportunities.
Founded in 2005, AYM promotes media arts to middle and high school students, as a life-enhancing creative activity and a path to rewarding and sustainable careers. Since 2023, our students have created short films, podcasts, and art in our studio.
AYM is the only nonprofit organization in Montgomery County that offers out-of-school media arts training free of cost to middle school and high school students. Check out some of our students’ projects: https://www.youtube.com/@filmswithafocus.
About the Action Youth Media Board
Our board is composed of leaders from across Montgomery County and the greater DC region. We see our role as helping to build relationships with, and for, families who need the most support - to improve the quality and depth of our media programs, increase the number of programs, and provide the wraparound support that middle and high school students need to succeed. The AYM Board supports the success of AYM’s Executive Director and staff. Our board members provide valuable perspectives, expertise, and experience to help the organization best welcome and serve youth in under-represented families.
The AYM Board meets the second or third Saturday every other month at 10 am. Meetings in April, August, and December are in-person. All other meetings are virtual. In addition to attending meetings of the full board, each board member serves on a committee and hosts or participates in various organizational events to move our Strategic Plan forward.
Professionals with skills in any of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:
Please send a resume and cover letter addressing your interest.
Looking for something other than board membership? AYM also has opportunities for community leaders or others who may be qualified to represent the underserved families and communities in the DC metro region. If you are interested, or just want to learn more about our organization, we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
We're not limited to, but we are looking for interested parties who live and/or work in Montgomery County, MD.
