    Description

    Become an AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP volunteer and serve with Boston Medical Center.

    *Must be 55+

    BMC Volunteer Position

    • Name of Volunteer Position: Book and Entertainment Cart Volunteer
    • Location: Volunteer Services Office, Hospital Units

    Purpose

    • The Book and Entertainment Cart Volunteer will stock the book and entertainment cart and bring the cart to specific hospital floors to share items with patients for additional comfort and support

    Description (includes duties, responsibilities, what the volunteer may learn or gain in experience, any special abilities needed, etc.)

    Entertainment Cart Volunteers:

    • Attend training on B&E Cart services
    • Stock the cart with variety of books (topics, languages, age ranger, etc.)
    • Move the cart from the VS office to different units on different floors
    • Interact with patients to help them choose items from the cart
    • Gain insight into patient care, observe medical staff, provide comfort
    • Return cart to VS Office when shift is complete

    Requirements

    • Ability to communicate in a welcoming and professional manner
    • Able to take initiative
    • Organizational skills
    • Customer Service skills
    • General knowledge of hospital environment, patient needs, staff relations
    • General knowledge of books and literature
    • Able to lift boxes of books, bend, twist
    • Able to move the cart throughout the hospital

    Other requirements:

    • Submitting vaccination records for medical clearance
    • A background check, and orientation.

    Basic requirements are a commitment to volunteering for a minimum of six months, with a minimum of one 3 hour shift each week. Shifts in general run every 3 hours, beginning at 6 AM and ending at 6 PM, Monday through Friday.
