TutoringVolunteers Needed for Homeless Children's Education Fund

Be There, Build Connection, Inspire Growth

Your time can help a child feel supported, build confidence, and discover their own potential.

Homeless Children's Education Fund (HCEF) is looking for caring and motivated volunteers with experience working with children ages 5–14 to join our Tutoring Programs. Volunteers partner with professional instructors to bring fun, individualized learning experience directly to children experiencing housing instability.

    Responsibilities

    • Partner with HCEF's professional instructors to help bring learning, encouragement, and connection directly to K–8th grade students.
      • Be a trusted, positive presence who models confidence, resilience, and a love of learning.
      • Encourage students through positive reinforcement, active listening, and enthusiasm.
      • Celebrate students' strengths, progress, and accomplishments.
      • Can work with students in either a group setting or with 1–3 students at a time
      • Take part in engaging activities such as educational games, homework help, and social-emotional learning.

    Expectations

      • Commit to at least one 1–2 hour session each week.
      • Be available during after-school hours, Mondays- Thursdays typically between 3:30–6:30 PM.
      • Be comfortable working in a variety of settings, including:
      • Local shelters and housing agencies
      • Family residences
      • Community centers
      • Parks and libraries
      • Winnie’s Wagon, HCEF's classroom on wheels
      • Approach every space and family with respect, flexibility, and an open mind.
      • Complete required PA Child Abuse, FBI Fingerprinting, and PA State Criminal Clearances.
      • Attend HCEF's required volunteer training before beginning.

    Why Volunteer?

    Because showing up matters.

      • Make a meaningful difference in the life of a child.
      • Help students build confidence, academic skills, and a love of learning.
      • Be a consistent, positive adult presence for children navigating housing instability.
      • Gain hands-on experience supporting children's education and development.
      • Work alongside HCEF's professional instructors and become part of a team dedicated to helping students thrive.
      • Each session requires a volunteer—your commitment literally makes these sessions possible!
