Get Drawn In: Anime Crew Shoujo at Extreme Kids and Crew

Are you looking to share your special interests with the world? Are you excited by the chance to center and celebrate the experiences of neurodiverse children? Are you ready to make a difference and have a great time while doing it?

Whether you’re a student, professional, or just someone passionate about inclusion and fun, if the answer to any of the questions above is an enthusiastic yes, we’d love to have you on our team! Please consider joining Extreme Kids & Crew as a volunteer for our Weekly Club Programs.

Extreme Kids and Crew (EKC) is an organization that provides play spaces for neurodivergent youth and their families. These collaborative community spaces foster self-confidence and community development for young people often isolated from public spaces. We are looking for enthusiastic, caring individuals to support our programs for neurodivergent children and their families. Volunteers engage with the kids throughout the session while encouraging creativity, participation, and joy throughout our time together. This is a wonderful opportunity to build meaningful connections, be part of a supportive community, and directly impact the lives of amazing kids and families.

    WHAT TO EXPECT

    • Set-Up & Clean-Up: Help prepare the space before activities begin and tidy up after the fun.
    • Engagement: Interact with the kids, encouraging creativity, participation, and joy throughout the session.

    ABOUT THE PROGRAM

    Anime Crew: Shoujo

(located at the Brooklyn Public Library - Brower Park Branch, 155 Brooklyn Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11213)

    DESCRIPTION

Anime Crew: Shoujou is designed for girls aged 9-12, but welcomes any young person interested in learning more about shoujo anime, a rich and diverse sub-genre within the anime landscape. Participants will explore the different types of shoujo and their equally wide range of heroines. They will also learn about character design and storyboarding, leading towards the creation of short manga comics. Throughout, the program centers and celebrates the curiosity and creativity that crew members bring to the table. These weekly gatherings are free, and all necessary materials will be provided. The program is led by EKC’s Program Manager for Library Services and Community Partnerships, Cristina Nava-Sosa, an anime and manga enthusiast who will showcase Shoujou both old and new, as well as offerings recommended by the crew. These sessions encourage girls to explore the full scope of their imaginations, tapping into their inner storytellers and artists, while also developing their social and collaboration skills in a supportive and non-judgmental environment.
