Volunteer Opportunity: Become a Volunteer Ombudsman!

We are excited to share a meaningful new opportunity to advocate for seniors in our community by becoming a Volunteer Ombudsman. Ombudsman are advocates working from the point of view of the residents.

Volunteer Ombudsmen play a vital role in defending the rights of seniors living in local long-term care (LTC) homes. This role is ideal for volunteers who are passionate about advocacy, dignity, and improving quality of care for older adults.

What the role involves:

• • Advocating for seniors within local LTC homes by providing resident-directed advocacy services
  • Conduct routine visits to LTC homes to talk with residents about care and quality of life.
  • Provide education to community -based organizations and LTC homes.
  • Helping ensure residents’ rights are respected
  • Occasionally requesting a facility’s emergency care plan and forwarding it to a supervisor
  • Assisting with clerical tasks or community events that promote the program (as needed)

Training Requirements:

• • Approximately 36 hours of classroom training – some web based
  • Monthly in-person class attendance
  • A minimum of 10 hours of shadowing an experienced Ombudsman
  • Ongoing training opportunities provided throughout your service

Volunteer details:

• • No on-call requirements
  • No strict time commitment or scheduling restrictions
  • Mileage reimbursement is available when you volunteer a minimum of 3 hours in one day
  • Flexible scheduling with meaningful, hands-on impact
