Our mission at Lily’s Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary is to provide a safe and loving home for large breed senior dogs who have been displaced from their homes and/or abandoned for any reason, until they are adopted or to remain at the sanctuary until they pass on. All the dogs who come into our care at Lily’s Legacy are provided with top notch veterinary care. They are given a thorough examination and often we find very treatable conditions that we support while they wait for their forever homes. But sometimes those conditions are not treatable and we know the time they have left will be shortened. If a dog is not adoptable they will always have a place at our sanctuary, but this is no substitute for the love and comfort of a real home. For these dogs we search for Fospice Homes (Foster + Hospice). These very special volunteers provide the dog with compassion, companionship, reassurance, food and a warm spot to call their own for however long the dog has left. Lily’s Legacy provides ongoing medical care and any treatment and prescriptions needed. A Fospice volunteer may be asked to transport their foster dog(s) to scheduled medical appointments. Therefore, we ask that fosters live in the Northern California Bay Area (Marin or Sonoma counties preferred). Together, our goal is to give these sweet dogs the best rest-of-life they can possibly have. Additional positive outcomes are Lily’s ability to help more dogs, as well as the wonderful impact that providing loving, end of life care can have on the fospice family themselves. For these dogs, this is the greatest gift they can receive.
What is needed to be a Senior Dog Fospice volunteer:
Being a Fospice family for a senior dog is an immensely rewarding experience, and it changes their lives in a very direct way at their time of greatest need. Your act of kindness is repaid in rewards that are beyond words.
