    Description

Friendly Visiting with Homebound Older Adults – Flexible, Meaningful Service (Great for Students & All Ages) in Washington Heights, Upper Manhattan, West & Central Harlem, East Harlem, Lenox Hill

The Carter Burden Network’s Friendly Visiting Program matches homebound older adults with compassionate volunteers who provide weekly in-home visits. Volunteers help reduce social isolation by offering companionship, conversation, and connection — a lifeline for many older adults wishing to remain independent, safe, and supported in their homes.

This volunteer role is excellent for college students exploring careers in social work, psychology, nursing, public health, aging services, or community engagement — and is equally open to volunteers of all ages and backgrounds who want to make a meaningful difference.

    What You’ll Do:

    • Visit your matched older adult weekly in their home
    • Engage in activities like chatting, playing games, reading together, doing light creative projects, or taking a walk (if the senior is able)
    • Build a supportive and caring relationship
    • Provide brief updates to the program team as needed

    Matching Process:

You’ll be matched by an experienced Coordinator based on:

    • Your location
    • Availability
    • Shared interests
    • Personal preferences

    No experience necessary!

Volunteers receive training and ongoing support from staff with years of experience in Friendly Visiting.

    Program Requirements:

    • Must be at least 18 years old
    • Commit to volunteering for a minimum of 6 months
    • Provide two non-familial references
    • Complete a background check

    What You’ll Gain:

    • Hands-on experience valuable for social services and human-centered careers
    • A strong resume booster demonstrating commitment, empathy, and community engagement
    • Flexible scheduling and meaningful interaction
    • The chance to make a powerful impact in the life of an older adult
    • Support from a dedicated team that ensures you have a positive volunteer experience

    About the Carter Burden Network:

For over 40 years, the Carter Burden Network (CBN) has been committed to helping older adults remain in their homes, living independently, safely, and with dignity. Volunteers play a vital role in CBN’s mission, and we work hard to ensure every volunteer has a meaningful and fulfilling experience — no matter your schedule or background.
