    Description

Community Events Team Members help create welcoming, joyful, and inclusive experiences that strengthen community and foster belonging. Working alongside Maybelle staff, members, and fellow volunteers, this team provides ongoing support for events throughout the year—from recurring celebrations and programs to one-time activities and larger annual events.

This is an ongoing team role for people who enjoy being part of a community and contributing consistently over time. Team members may support different events based on their interests and availability, while helping Maybelle build a dependable group of people who can return regularly and become familiar faces within the community.

Whether welcoming members, preparing a space, supporting an outing, assisting with refreshments, or sharing conversation over a meal or activity, Community Events Team Members help create environments where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Depending on the event, Community Events Team Members may:

    • Participate as a member of the Community Events Team and contribute to consistent, reliable event support throughout the year.
    • Communicate availability and respond to event invitations in a timely way so the team can coordinate coverage.
    • Welcome members and help create a warm, inclusive atmosphere.
    • Build relationships through conversation, shared activities, and presence.
    • Assist with event setup, decorating, preparation, and resetting spaces.
    • Prepare, serve, or distribute refreshments when applicable.
    • Support member participation during celebrations, workshops, outings, arts and cultural experiences, community forums, and seasonal events.
    • Assist with greeting, registration, distributing materials, or wayfinding.
    • Provide general logistical support and adapt as event needs change.
    • Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to help events run smoothly.
    • Maintain an environment grounded in dignity, inclusion, respect, and belonging.
    • Participate in event planning meetings and preparation activities as needed.
    • Attend planning meetings for larger events to review logistics, volunteer roles, and expectations, as well as day-of-event briefings when needed.

    EVENTS MAY INCLUDE:

Monthly and seasonal celebrations, arts & culture outings and community excursions, quarterly Member Forums and belonging retreats, and creative programs and special events such as art classes, concerts, ceramics, community choir, and theatre.

Each event is unique, and volunteer responsibilities vary. When a Food Handler Card is required, Maybelle will cover the cost of obtaining one online.

    TIME COMMITMENT

Events take place throughout the year on weekdays and occasional weekends. Some events recur on a regular schedule, while others are one-time opportunities.

Shifts typically range from 2–4 hours, depending on the event.

Community Events Team Members are asked to participate regularly, ideally at least once or twice each month when possible, while choosing opportunities that fit their schedule and interests. Consistent participation helps team members build familiarity with members, staff, and fellow volunteers and become a dependable part of the Maybelle community.

Team members will receive information about upcoming events and opportunities in advance and can indicate which events they are available to support.

    ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

Most Maybelle events take place at our Old Town location in Downtown Portland. Some events take place off-site at partner organizations, residential buildings, parks, cultural institutions, and other community locations.

Events are grounded in Maybelle Center’s mission of cultivating belonging and reducing isolation. Volunteers are invited not only to help events happen, but to become part of the community through curiosity, compassion, and connection.
