    Description

We're looking for a creative, resourceful Media Outreach Manager to help spread the word about Talking Tree through local news outlets, online publications, podcasts, and other media channels.

Many small businesses and nonprofits struggle to afford the legal resources they need, and we're working to change that. But to reach more people, we need help getting our story in front of the communities that could benefit most.

In this volunteer role, you'll research relevant media outlets, connect with journalists and editors, and pitch stories about Talking Tree's mission, technology, and community impact.

Our goal is to earn media coverage through genuine storytelling and relationship-building, not paid advertising. We're looking for someone who enjoys discovering interesting stories, making connections, and helping a good cause get the attention it deserves.

You don't need an existing media network or professional PR experience. Initiative, creativity, and persistence matter most.

    What You'll Do

    • Identify media opportunities: Research local newspapers, television stations, community news websites, business publications, podcasts, and other outlets that may be interested in covering Talking Tree.
    • Pitch our story: Reach out to journalists, reporters, editors, and producers with compelling story ideas about our nonprofit mission, legal technology, and community impact.
    • Secure earned media coverage: Work toward getting Talking Tree featured in news articles, interviews, podcasts, community spotlights, and other unpaid editorial opportunities.
    • Develop media relationships: Build and maintain connections with journalists and media professionals who cover nonprofits, small businesses, technology, and social impact.
    • Find creative story angles: Identify timely topics, local-interest stories, and community challenges that connect with Talking Tree's mission.
    • Coordinate media opportunities: Help arrange interviews, provide background information, and connect interested reporters with the Talking Tree team.
    • Track outreach and coverage: Maintain simple records of media contacts, pitches, follow-ups, and published features.

    Who We're Looking For

You don't need a degree in journalism, communications, or public relations. We're looking for someone who is curious, personable, and excited about helping a nonprofit gain visibility.

    Ideal qualifications:

    • Strong written communication skills and an ability to craft engaging, concise messages.
    • Comfortable reaching out to journalists, editors, and media organizations.
    • Creative thinker who can identify interesting stories and newsworthy angles.
    • Organized, persistent, and comfortable following up professionally.
    • Interested in public relations, journalism, nonprofit communications, or social impact.
    • Comfortable conducting online research and working independently.
    • Enthusiastic about making legal technology more accessible to underserved communities.

Experience in public relations, journalism, media relations, marketing, or communications is a plus, but not required.

    What You'll Gain

    • Make a meaningful impact: Help raise awareness of affordable legal resources among communities and organizations that need them.
    • Build real PR experience: Gain hands-on experience researching media outlets, pitching journalists, developing story angles, and securing earned media coverage.
    • Grow your professional portfolio: Develop a track record of media outreach campaigns and published features that you can highlight on your résumé or LinkedIn profile.
    • Expand your network: Build relationships with journalists, editors, media professionals, and nonprofit leaders.
    • Flexible volunteering: Work remotely on a schedule that fits your availability.
    • See your contributions in action: Help bring Talking Tree's mission to new audiences through real news coverage and media features.
