    Description

The Women’s Housing Coalition is seeking a volunteer to join our team to provide critical receptionist coverage in our busy administrative office.

    About the Women’s Housing Coalition

The Women's Housing Coalition (WHC) is a nonprofit organization in Baltimore dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness for individuals and families (with a focus on women) by providing affordable housing and supportive services to enable them to sustain social and financial independence. WHC serves formerly homeless, low-income individuals with disabilities and their families, providing housing, case management, clinical services, and life skills training. Services are tailored to meet the needs of each resident or family based on their individual situations and self-determined goals.

    Our Need

As a very busy nonprofit with limited funding, we are unable to provide adequate front office coverage to greet and assist residents and others coming to our Administrative Office for service or individuals. We are seeking one or several individuals to provide receptionist coverage for approximately four hours a day throughout the week. Primary duties will:

    • Greeting and interacting with residents and other visitors to WHC’s offices
    • Providing information and referral to individuals who stop by the office in need of housing and other general assistance
    • Accepting rent payments from residents and providing them with a receipt for payment
    • Sorting mail and accepting packages

    What you will gain

    • You will develop hands-on experience working in a small nonprofit where teamwork, cooperation and communication are critical to carrying out our work
    • You will be provided ample opportunity to build your verbal communication and interpersonal skills as you work with agency visitors, residents, and coworkers
    • You will gain a deeper understanding of the needs of homeless individuals and the services/supports available to them
    • You will have the opportunity to work on special projects with WHC’s management team and staff, based on your particular interests

    Qualifications

    • Ability and interest in working with our resident population
    • Ability to carefully listen to the needs of visitors and follow through with identifying options for meeting those needs
    • Ability to focus on detailed tasks within a hectic and sometimes chaotic environment
