Nebraska Wildlife Rehab Herptile Room Volunteer

These volunteers are trained to care for the Herptile species we rehabilitate.

We are currently only looking for volunteers that are willing to make a weekly commitment and go through our training process which includes: orientation, class training, and one-on-one training sessions.

Year round weekly 3 or 4-hour shifts are preferred for this opportunity, but not required. However there is an absolute minimum shift commitment of one 3 or 4-hour shift per month, year round.

• Normal vacations, if you are sick, or if you need to take time off for finals/etc., are all acceptable reasons to not be able to come in every week.
• Our busiest time of year is April through September (Baby Season), however we tend to have herptiles year-round.
  • The more you come in, the more you will learn. Volunteers who are unable to come in consistently may be barred from working in certain nurseries, and/or will be only tasked with basic tasks.

Herptile Room Volunteers clean turtle tubs, prepare turtle diets, clean/feed snakes & lizards, and potentially also learn to work with the other reptiles & amphibians we rehabilitate.

Tasks may include:

• Cleaning & providing food aquatic and terrestrial turtles.
• Cleaning & providing food for snakes. (no rat or bull snakes)
• Tong feeding snakes. (no rat or bull snakes)
• Weighing & measuring baby turtles.
• Cleaning & providing food for the other reptiles & amphibians we rehabilitate.

Bird, Herptile, and Mammal Nursery Training Classes are only held November through March.

These classes have prerequisites of:

1. Attendance of a New Volunteer Orientation
2. Cleaning & Diet Preparation Training Classes
3. 10-hours of Cleaning experience, onsite at NWR's Baldwin Wildlife Center
4. 10-hours of Diet Prep experience, onsite at NWR's Baldwin Wildlife Center

• All volunteers must be over the age of 18.
