Be the first welcome visitors receive at the Western Museum of Mining & Industry.
Museum Front Desk Volunteers play an active role in the museum’s daily operations. This is more than a greeting position. You will help guests begin their visit, process admissions, support the museum gift shop, and keep the front desk running smoothly.
What you will do
- Welcome guests and serve as a friendly, helpful first point of contact.
- Answer questions and provide general information about the museum, exhibits, programs, and visitor experience.
- Process museum admissions and collect payments through the point-of-sale system.
- Process gift shop purchases, handle cash and credit card transactions, and answer questions about merchandise.
- Answer incoming telephone calls and direct callers to the appropriate staff member.
- Direct guests, vendors, deliveries, and other visitors to the correct location or staff contact.
- Start movies in the museum theater when requested.
- Maintain an organized and welcoming front desk and gift shop area.
- Assist with other front desk and visitor-service needs.
Who we are looking for
- Adults age 18 or older who can pass a background check.
- Dependable people who are comfortable working with the public, handling money, and learning basic technology.
- Volunteers who communicate clearly, stay organized, and follow museum procedures.
Previous customer-service, retail, hospitality, tourism, or museum experience is helpful but not required. Training will be provided.

Schedule and commitment
Volunteers must commit to at least one shift per week.
Morning shift: 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM
Afternoon shift: 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM
Shifts are available Monday through Saturday. Openings vary by day and shift.

The Western Museum of Mining & Industry preserves and interprets the rich mining history of Colorado and the American West. Open since 1970, the museum connects visitors with the people, technology, and industries that helped shape the region.
Located on a 27-acre campus in Colorado Springs, WMMI features a 12,200-square-foot exhibit hall, working historic machinery, a model mining drift, gold-panning stations, historic buildings, educational programs, guided tours, and community events. Through interactive experiences and preservation, WMMI brings Western mining and industrial history to life for visitors of all ages.
