    Description

Adult ESOL or Basic Literacy Tutor Needed Today!

Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts at the Pollard Memorial Library provides free, confidential, one-on-one and small group tutoring to adults in the greater Lowell area on a flexible schedule. We are currently in great need of volunteer tutors and would love to welcome caring, committed community members to our program.

Becoming a tutor is a meaningful way to give back to your community and make a real difference in someone’s life. You do not need prior teaching experience or knowledge of another language—just patience, encouragement, and a desire to help others learn and grow.

We offer three types of tutoring opportunities. ESOL tutors work with adult learners who speak other languages and want to improve their English skills. Basic Literacy tutors support native English speakers who read at the 4th grade level or below and want to strengthen their reading and writing skills. Tutors that can teach a class. Tutors usually work one-on-one with a student, and there may also be opportunities to work with a small group or class.

In-person, remote, and hybrid tutoring options are available. Tutors are asked to commit to meeting with students for 2 hours per week on a flexible schedule for 9–12 months.

ALL volunteer tutors must attend a Volunteer Information Session prior to successfully completing an 18-hour tutor training, before they begin working with a student.
