    Description

Gotham Food Pantry is seeking a creative, reliable volunteer to lead the development of our new monthly video newsletter—or “Viewsletter.”

Gotham Food Pantry is a New York City nonprofit that has rescued and distributed more than 20 million pounds of nutritious food since 2020. Working alongside NYCHA resident leaders, volunteers, food businesses, and community partners, we help ensure that surplus food reaches New Yorkers who need it.

We want to bring that work to life through a short, engaging monthly video featuring highlights from our food rescues and distributions, volunteer and partner spotlights, community stories, organizational updates, and upcoming opportunities.

The volunteer in this leadership role would help shape the Viewsletter from the ground up, including its voice, visual style, recurring segments, and overall content strategy.

    Responsibilities may include:

    • Developing a repeatable format and content plan for the monthly Viewsletter
    • Working with Gotham’s team to identify timely stories, updates, and calls to action
    • Reviewing and organizing video clips and photos captured by staff and volunteers
    • Editing each edition into a polished, engaging video
    • Writing or refining scripts, captions, and on-screen text
    • Providing voiceover narration—or helping us develop an effective narration approach
    • Recommending practical ways for staff and volunteers to capture stronger footage
    • Creating shorter clips that can be repurposed for social media
    • Helping track engagement and improve the Viewsletter over time

We’re looking for someone who has:

    • Video editing experience
    • Strong storytelling and editorial instincts
    • An interest in content strategy and audience engagement
    • Clear written and verbal communication skills
    • The ability to manage a recurring project and meet monthly deadlines
    • Comfort working independently while collaborating with a small nonprofit team
    • An interest in food access, community organizing, or nonprofit communications

Experience with voiceover work, interviewing, graphic design, animation, or social media video is welcome but not required. Professional experience is not essential; a strong portfolio, student work, or demonstrated personal projects may be sufficient.

This is a flexible, primarily remote volunteer opportunity, although volunteers in New York City will also be welcome to attend food rescues, community distributions, and special events to capture footage and meet the people behind the work.

This is an opportunity to take meaningful ownership of a new communications initiative, build a compelling body of work, and help more people understand—and become involved in—Gotham Food Pantry’s mission.

To apply, please send a brief introduction explaining your interest to info@gothamfoodpantry.org with the Subject Line: Viewsletter. Please provide your general availability, and links to any relevant video, audio, or storytelling work.
