    Description

Our volunteer ESL tutors and learners meet one-on-one to improve English language tasks such as:

    • vocabulary
    • idiom and slang
    • spoken accent and fluency
    • reading
    • formal public speaking
    • grammar
    • following the news (print, television, online)
    • writing for school, work, or social media
    • prepping for a parent-teacher conference, doctor's appointment, job interview, etc.

The content of the sessions is driven by the learner's personal priorities, which are discussed and recorded in early meetings. The tutor's role is to focus on supporting the learner's goals. No experience is required, and you do not need to know the student’s native language.

Tutoring sessions usually last 1 hour (or a little longer) and are held at the same time and place each week. Meetings may need to be rescheduled or skipped occasionally, but consistency is an important part of success. Tutors may expect to spend up to an additional hour a week reviewing progress and preparing for the next meeting. (The Bridge Learning & Literacy Center at the Main Library has free learning resources for tutors and learners).

Meetings may take place at any of our library locations, including The Bridge's meeting rooms, or even virtually over a video call.

    Requirements:

    • Patience, sensitivity, and flexibility are essential.
    • Humor, warmth, and encouragement are valued, too!
    • Six month commitment. (Sessions with the same learner may continue after this period by mutual agreement, or you may request to be re-matched.)
    • Be at least 19 years of age.
    • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
    • File online monthly report.
