    Description

Site Support Volunteer, Center City Charter School (Shaw)

Northstar Tutoring’s mission is to help low-income and underserved K-12th grade students in the D.C. area reach their full potential by overcoming barriers to personal and academic success. By pairing each student with a dedicated tutor and mentor, Northstar provides the free academic support and personal attention that many of these students would not otherwise have access to.

We are seeking Site Support Volunteers to assist Northstar staff during our tutoring sessions at Center City Charter School, located at 711 N St. NW, Washington, DC 20001.

Tutoring sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Volunteers may commit to one or both days each week. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with children and wants to make a meaningful impact while helping our program run smoothly.

Unlike our tutor positions, Site Support Volunteers are not assigned to a single student. Instead, they serve as an extra set of hands throughout the afternoon by assisting students, tutors, and staff as needed.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Greeting students as they arrive and helping them get settled.
    • Sitting with students whose tutors have not yet arrived.
    • Helping distribute worksheets, books, and other tutoring materials.
    • Ensuring tables have the supplies needed for each session.
    • Answering basic questions and directing tutors and students as needed.
    • Assisting with attendance and other light organizational tasks.
    • Helping create a welcoming, organized environment for everyone participating in the program.

There is no expectation of completing work outside of the tutoring sessions, making this a great opportunity for individuals looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity that fits easily into their schedule.

    Qualifications:

    • Enjoys working with children in grades K through 8.
    • Friendly, dependable, and organized.
    • Comfortable taking initiative and helping wherever needed.
    • Able to communicate effectively with students, tutors, and staff.
    • No teaching or tutoring experience is required.

If you are interested in supporting students and helping our tutoring sessions run smoothly, we would love to have you join us!

If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please reach out to Jennifer Townsend at JTownsend@northstartutoring.org.
