    Description

Volunteer Board Director - Through It All, Inc. (Remote)

Help Build a Nonprofit That Believes in Guidance, Not Control.

Through It All, Inc. is a Illinois-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting young adults, beginning at age 18, as they work toward establishing safe, stable, independent lives.

We believe individuals should have access to guidance, advocacy, education, resources, and supportive relationships without surrendering ownership of their decisions, goals, or futures.

Our philosophy is rooted in self-determination, dignity, respect, accountability, and empowerment.

    The Opportunity

Through It All, Inc. is rebuilding its organizational foundation and seeking two independent volunteer Board Directors who are interested in helping establish a strong, accountable, and sustainable nonprofit organization.

This is an opportunity to contribute during an important developmental stage, when thoughtful leadership, diverse perspectives, and sound governance practices are especially valuable.

We are seeking individuals who are willing to learn, ask meaningful questions, contribute ideas, and respectfully challenge assumptions when necessary.

We value independent thinking over automatic agreement.

    Key Responsibilities

Volunteer Board Directors will be expected to:

    • Participate in organizational planning and strategic decision-making.
    • Help establish and maintain effective nonprofit governance practices.
    • Review organizational policies, priorities, and progress.
    • Support financial oversight, transparency, and accountability.
    • Contribute to discussions concerning organizational sustainability and future program development.
    • Exercise independent judgment and act in the best interests of the organization.
    • Collaborate respectfully with fellow Board members while maintaining appropriate governance boundaries.
    • Support the organization's mission, values, and long-term vision.

    Qualifications

We welcome individuals from diverse professional, educational, and lived-experience backgrounds.

Prior nonprofit Board experience is welcome but not required.

    Ideal candidates will demonstrate:

    • Dependability and a willingness to follow through on commitments.
    • Integrity, sound judgment, and a commitment to ethical leadership.
    • Strong communication and collaborative problem-solving skills.
    • Willingness to learn nonprofit governance responsibilities.
    • Comfort expressing differing perspectives respectfully.
    • Commitment to personal accountability and organizational transparency.
    • Genuine interest in supporting young adults and strengthening communities.

Experience in nonprofit management, finance, law, education, social services, organizational development, fundraising, or community engagement may be beneficial but is not required.

    Time Commitment

    • One virtual Board meeting per month, approximately 90 minutes.
    • Approximately 1–2 additional hours monthly for preparation, review, and independent Board responsibilities.
    • Additional involvement may be discussed as organizational needs evolve.

    Our Current Stage

Through It All, Inc. is in an organizational rebuilding and development phase.

Our immediate priorities include strengthening governance, establishing sustainable operations, and preparing the foundation for future services.

Prospective Board members should understand that this is a hands-on opportunity to help shape an organization during its development, rather than joining an already fully operational program.

    Our Commitment to Board Members

We aim to create a Board culture where thoughtful questions are welcomed, respectful disagreement is valued, responsibilities are clearly communicated, and decisions are made with the organization's mission and long-term interests in mind.

We believe effective governance requires collaboration, accountability, continuous learning, and independent judgment.

    How to Express Interest

Individuals interested in serving as volunteer Board Directors are invited to complete our Board Interest Questionnaire.

The questionnaire allows prospective candidates to share their backgrounds, interests, availability, and perspectives on nonprofit Board service.

Qualified candidates may be invited to participate in a follow-up conversation to explore mutual expectations and organizational fit.

Join us in building an organization that respects individual choice, supports independence, and believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to move forward with dignity and purpose.
