Future Teachers: Run Your Own Weekly Tutoring Session (Remote, High School)
Details
Description
Find out if you love teaching before you declare a major in it.
Lumi Learning is a free, student-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a 2026 Anthem Awards finalist. We match high school tutors with K-8 students for weekly online sessions in reading and math. If you are considering education, child psychology, speech pathology, or any career that puts you in front of kids, this is the closest thing to a classroom you can get at 16.
You run the session. We give you training, a week-one diagnostic, and a plan for each meeting, but how you explain long division to a third grader who hates long division is up to you. Over a semester you will watch one student go from stuck to steady, and you will know whether this is your thing.
What You Get
- Real teaching reps with one student, every week, for a semester
- Training in how to run a diagnostic, pace a session, and give feedback kids can use
- A letter of recommendation from Lumi Learning, on request after one semester, for tutors who show up every week
- Volunteer hours tracked automatically in your portal
Who Fits
- Current US high school student, grades 9 to 12
- Curious about how kids learn and patient when they do not learn on the first try
- Able to hold one fixed 30-minute weekly slot (two if you want more practice)
